South Warren STLP
The South Warren STLP team is made up of about 30 students and led by Mr. Priddy. One thing the group does is create the South Warren Media Show. Another thing is compete in the STLP Competitions.
STLP in General:
STLP stands for Student Technology Leadership Program. Schools statewide participate in Fall Showcase, where they present showcases and find out if they will advance to the State Competition in the spring. At State, the advanced showcases present again, but there are also other projects that have been submitted that include everything from Twitter Service to Technical Writing.
2010-2011
Our first year in existence as an STLP group and a school was an experiment as far as STLP goes. At Fall Showcase, we presented 3 showcases: the South Warren Radio Show by Cejay Moore, Brooke DeCesare, and Finley Sehorn; The South Warren webpage by Sara Davis and Caroline Simpson; and the South Warren Media Show by Reagan Miller, Taylor Frint, and Bailey Vandiver (me). All 3 advanced to State.
Over the winter we started exploring the other STLP projects you could complete and submit to be judged. Reagan and I chose a Feature video, and wrote a song about technology. There were many projects and since we were just getting started, we didn't do nearly as many as we could have as a group.
By the time State Competition arrived, we had lost two important members of our team. Taylor Frint moved to Drakes Creek in January and Finley Sehorn moved to Texas in May, leaving two of our showcases with only two people instead of three.
At the competition, we were judged the same way we were at Fall. After getting judged, we waited until the announcement of what showcases would advance to the 3rd round and be judged again. When the news came, only one of our showcases had advanced- mine and Reagan's. We were so excited and were judged by several more judges.
During this time we found out that our Technology Song had won first place in Feature Video, meaning we would get an award and be recognized on stage.
So going into the awards ceremony we knew we were getting that and recognition for being in the Top 60 Showcases. When they announced showcases, our name wasn't called and we were wondering why. Then we realized that we would be called last because we were in the Top 10. The Top 3 went on to Nationals, and we were so close. But even though we didn't make it to the very top, we did something in our first year that many schools never do.
2011-2012
In our second year, we came back ready to do even better than we had before. We took 4 showcases this time, the South Warren Media Show by Reagan and I again, Safe Surfin' by Natalie Poff and Joy Fan, Technology Night by Brooke Bush and Madison Priddy, and Stock the Cart by Sydney Willingham and Morgan Mason. Again, all 4 advanced to State. Again, only one advanced to the 3rd round, but this time it was Brooke and Madison. They went on to get our 2nd Top 10 Showcase in 2 years.
Reagan and I won our Feature Video again, with the completely original song "TechNoMore." We actually got to watch our video play on the big screen in Rupp Arena, something that happened last year but we didn't get to see.
South Warren had someone receiving an award in almost every category of the competition. Every time you looked up on stage, there was a gray and black SWMS shirt, maybe even a couple. We got over 20 awards in various categories. The 8th graders hope to continue this at the high school and Mr. Priddy and the 7th graders hope to continue this legacy in the years to come.
